Healthcare Horrors!

Updated: May 27, 2020

OMG ! So TRAGIC ! is that the best you can mutter to yourself?! Yeah…I said It!

People are dying! Dying due to treatable medical conditions going unresolved! People who have survived wars, economic meltdowns and cancer only to die from something as random as a shitty stroke! Have we become Comfortably Numb?

People can’t get to medical treatment due to COVID 19 hospital policies. If they are fortunate enough to even reach the hospital in time they will get turned away and most of the time don’t get any explanation other than the patient needs a COVID19 test before admission. The results of which takes 3 days…could possibly need to be re-administered due to lack of accuracy! Can only be issued by government appointed labs and only after obtaining the required prescription which one is supposed to obtain while staying quarantined in your own home and call a government helpline 1075 or your state helpline numbers https://indianhelpline.com/ I wish you luck but also suggest you try to make your own luck by staying obsessively careful and vigilant.

What does it mean that people are dying while trying to get to some kind of basic medical treatment? At the same time hospitals are claiming to be inundated by patients, but in some cases posting daily flat rates for rooms that are 3 times the normal rates. Unquestioned and unregulated they will now attempt to treat you, if you have the currency to save your pathetic ass. Are Hospitals Rationing Care to the Highest Bidder?

What does one say when a person needs to first be ‘sick enough’ to get admitted for COVID19 treatment? If you are not sick enough you stay at home putting your loved ones at risk and hoping that your homecare precautions will be enough to protect you and them.

What does it mean when a 70 year old lady has to run from one hospital to the next while suffering a stroke?

How does a 25 year old die within hours of being refused admission into a hospital emergency? Cause of death currently undiagnosed.

Why does a nurse who contracted COVID19 get turned away from the very hospital where she worked?

How surreal is it that a husband is notified to pick up his wife’s body at the hospital 2 days after she was admitted for a ‘few tests’?

Where is the Government with its lofty promises of aid and assistance with all the self-congratulatory pats on the back? We clapped and cheered, we banged everything we had at our disposal, we went dark as part of the performance piece we were instructed to unfold. We were instructed and we performed and conformed to every extension and change in the rules of social distancing. What have we got in return? Other than more public service videos and instructions on how to protect ourselves while living through further extensions of the lockdown!

Healthcare has always taken the backseat to Economic security and Trade, National security, Infrastructural Development and Progress, War on terror and other threats to the nation, perceived or actual.

Rectifying a dysfunctional healthcare system is an insurmountable challenge as it stands and what is one to do with a non-existent healthcare system in this time?

Nobody is coming! You’re on your own! Deal with it.

Corona Virus patients have now taken to social media and forming support groups online to reduce the stress and anxiety, exchange information and reduce misinformation about possible treatments. Power to the People!

It seems abundantly clear that those of us who can; need to look after ourselves in medical terms in addition to the physical, financial, emotional and mental aspects.

The disease can complicate underlying, chronic medical conditions like diabetes or hypertension or congestive heart failure or other major illness so stay on top of your medical requirements should you be in or have loved ones in the high risk group.

Whatsapp has as always spearheaded the movement in both, educating and misinforming us (#TheUniverseIsAboutBalance) on the various possible medical remedies available in all the various forms of matter. Make sure to use those fact checker skills we seem to have developed instinctively.

I would suggest that one do a deep dive into emergency first aid so as to be better prepared to handle your own myocardial infarction.

People at risk for stroke include those who have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and those who smoke. Look into the ‘FAST’ approach to help recognise and provide emergency care.

Read up on the ABCs of First Aid… Airway, Breathing, Circulation. So as to be able to provide your family members with the necessary CPR in the unfortunate event that they would need it and your local hospital refuses to admit them.

Review the basics on choking and fainting especially if you have children and the elderly at home. Don’t assume you know what to do. Panic is a natural reaction and when it’s a loved one you don’t want to be rendered immobile due to this.

While I can understand that none of us are operating any heavy machinery it wouldn’t hurt to review basic first aid for bleeding, burns and electric shock.

It may seem like the End of Days at times just remember Churchill said ‘If you’re going through Hell, Keep Going!

Stay Safe and Wash your hands while singing Happy Birthday… TWICE!
