Why did Rihanna Tweet about the #FarmersProtest in India?

Tens of thousands of farmers have been protesting on the borders of the capital Delhi for more than two months against new laws that will loosen the rules around the sale, pricing and storage of agricultural produce.

Rihanna's tweet on Tuesday linked to a news story about the internet blockade at the protest sites and soon went viral, gaining more than 700,000 likes. "Why aren't we talking about this?!" wrote the singer, who has 100 million followers on the social network.

The government pushback was swift, led by Home Minister Amit Shah who tweeted on Wednesday night with hashtags #IndiaAgainstPropaganda and #IndiaTogether. "No propaganda can deter India's unity! No propaganda can stop India to attain new heights! Propaganda can not decide India's fate… only 'Progress' can. India stands united and together to achieve progress," he wrote.

And after climate campaigner Greta Thunberg shared a link to register objections to the new laws, police in Delhi said they were investigating whether there was an international campaign to damage India's reputation.

But before we have the misfortune of hearing condemnation against Rihanna or Greta or other outsiders here is whats opinionated:

  • Outsiders might not be aware of the various bills passed of the regulations of the farming sector, BUT that is not the concern here-

  • The voice raised is about the violation of Human Rights - Suppression of Free Internet - Hate Speech - Abuse of Power and State Propaganda.

  • While sources will have you think these are outside forces that are trying to control the functioning of our country, we must remember these are not aliens but merely fellow humans who are speaking out of sympathy towards human rights.

  • These become 2 different debates. You can have differences and opinions in laws and its policies, but do not let that difference play into others debate which consists of human rights and freedom.

  • Journalist are being harassed - Internet has been banned - Hate Speech - Protesters are being vilified through media propaganda - That Is The Issue that has taken Global center stage.

  • It is the same as: Domestic Violence at Home is 'ghar ki baat', "tum kaun hote ho hamare andar ke maamlo mein bolene waale"

  • Because the oppressors fear that a free thinking mind that is not dependent on them will always try to paint their influence as interference.
